Tight curls and coils naturally cluster at the root, often leaving the crown looking flat even when the ends spring beautifully. Achieving volume without frizz is a matter of knowing where and how to lift.
Why Roots Need Special Attention
The base of the curl is dense and compact, and without intervention, hair can dry close to the scalp. Volume requires separating at the roots while protecting curl integrity through the lengths.
Tools for Controlled Lift
Volumizing picks are a traditional go-to, inserted gently at the scalp to create space.
Wide-tooth combs can achieve a similar effect, especially at the crown.
Finishing brushes smooth surface layers afterward to prevent a halo of frizz.
While Bass doesn’t produce picks, our wide-tooth combs and curl-conscious brushes are ideal for maintaining definition while encouraging lift.
The Technique
Wait until curls are fully dry. Root lifting on damp hair risks frizz.
Insert at the scalp. Whether with a comb or pick, avoid dragging through the length.
Work perimeter first. Sides and nape set the shape before tackling the crown.
Shake and set. Flip the head gently, shake, then pat into place.
Polishing the Look
Once volume is achieved, surface frizz can be tamed with a dry finishing brush or a touch of serum on palms. The goal isn’t to force curls into place—it’s to lift them while keeping their natural story intact.
